Shawn started participating in days services in the workshop at ABS a few years ago. This past winter, Shawn decided he was ready to look for his first job. He began working with Jessine, an Employment Specialist to figure out what he wanted to do. Since Shawn had had very little exposure to different types of jobs, they started by assessing his interests. Shawn’s favorite things are farming and animals. Shawn applied for an Employment Skills Package through department of Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. From there, they began to shadow different types of jobs related to farming and animals. One of the places he shadowed was Country Side Bed and Biscuit, a doggy daycare and boarding business. Shawn went and met with the owner Becky. He got to see different job tasks that they perform each day and played with the dogs. After his visit in March, Shawn was hired on part time. He is responsible for exercising and playing with the dogs, cleaning up after them and cleaning kennels. His favorite things to do are playing fetch and ball. He really likes to fill up the pool and help the dogs swim while he is there. Shawn never forgets a dog even if he does not see them for a few months. He loves all of the dogs but his favorite ones are the small dogs because he can pick them up and carry them around with him. Shawn’s mom picks him up from work and says that most days he is wet and smells like a dog, but he always happy and has the biggest smile she has ever seen.
