Providing Opportunities for Enriched Lives

Any person with a developmental disability who has met the eligibility criteria will be considered to receive services from Ability Building Services.  Referrals to ABS for services may be initiated by the person, family members, guardians, advocates, other Agency personnel, school districts, or other interested people from the community.

The Admissions Process

Ability Building Services has an Admissions Committee.  The Admissions Committee reviews all applicants who wish to obtain services from ABS.  Functions of the Admission Committee are as follows:

  1. The Admission Committee Chairperson will initially review all referrals.  Referrals not meeting eligibility requirements will receive notification and be referred to other appropriate agencies.
  2. For applicants who meet the eligibility requirements, their information is reviewed by the Admission Committee.
  3. The Admission Committee identifies the person’s needs and whether or not ABS can provide the services he/she is seeking.
  4. Should the Admission Committee agree that ABS can meet the person’s needs, his/her name is added to the waiting list.
  5. An opening in the appropriate environment(s) and a funding source must be secure before the person can begin receiving services from ABS.

The Admissions Committee will only admit those people whose needs can be met by ABS directly or in cooperation with community resources or other service providers with which ABS is affiliated.

The following basic criteria will be used to evaluate a person’s eligibility for services:

The person must be 16 years of age, or older.  Younger people may be considered, if the Admission Committee decides that ABS is the most suitable placement for the person.

The person must have a developmental disability.  A diagnosis must be available, in writing, from a physician, psychologist, or other appropriate professional.

The person must be eligible for an appropriate funding source (government entitlement program, rehabilitation services, special education, etc.) or able to purchase services with his/her resources.
